For a while now I have been looking into KAP (kite aerial photography). A new challenge and weapon to add to my growing arsenal of picture taking abilities.
I stumbled across KAP when I was looking for a way to get a camera in the sky that was affordable and not neck breaking. That's when I found Brooxes.com, Brooks Leffler is an expert in KAP and his site has everything to get you started. Not only is he a authority in his field, he is a great person to do business with. He has answered all my questions, (no matter how ridicules, they might have been) and shipped my purchases in a swift and timely matter.
I have asked other kite makers when they could have a kite ready for me and there reply is 8 weeks, 9 weeks 3 months… Here in Idaho the windy season will be done by then, so you can imagine how delighted I was when Brooks said he could send me a good KAP kite right away.
My kite in the photo above, (a flow form 5) is too small for what I need to haul a camera rig up in the sky in light winds.
The SERVO-BEAK
This is the quintessential part of KAP equipment I ordered from Brooks, the servo-beak. While aloft in the air, clipped to the kite line it will automatically shoot photos and rotate the camera getting a nice spectrum of the countryside. As pictured, I have my Nikon Coolpix point and shoot camera mounted to the servo beak. At Brooxes.com you can find many different combinations that can accommodate several cameras.
Getting a new KAP kite
Right now with my current kite I can only get about 10 or 15 feet in the air with a strong wind. I have some awful good photos of my feet. But that is neither here nor there, because I have a good KAP kite on it’s way. It should show up some time this week at my home and I will follow up, wind willing, with some good KAP!

Wow - very interesting! And neat kite picture too!
How do you tell what you're going to get a picture of? You just choose what you like from what photos it gets?
That is just soooo cool. I never heard of that but I'm sure you'll get some great pics...Looks complicated tho...I'm lucky I can operate my Ipod, lol.
Nice rig, btw :-).
Roger that is way to cool, should get some interesting captures for sure, love the shot of the kite and the cool background.
