8 A Big Kite “The Fled”

the fled

The postal service delivered “The Fled” kite last week. This is a huge kite 5 1/2’ x 6’ it is a light lifter, suitable in winds of 6 to 12 mph. Well I could not wait to get this baby in the air! But wouldn't you know it, no wind.

holding the line

The very next day the wind was blowing, very excited. She launched with hardly any help at all. I had the camera rig all ready to go and clipped to the line. She pulls great, the camera rig and kite sailed right on up, at a steep angle which works good for KAP.

I had “The Fled” kite up about 250 feet and was a little nervous about the height and my location in conjunction to some nearby power lines. Bringing her back down took a some time. I took a few breaks by running a couple of half hitches to a piece of  farm equipment holding the line in place.

The Fled kite handled great, a very stable kite, if you live in an area that has low winds this is the kite for you. For information to purchase “The Fled” or KAP go to Brooxs.com.

The fun part of Kap’ing is getting your camera rig back down and seeing what was captured. Here is a few examples of what I caught.

Questions and Answers

Q: Bond Now this is cool Roger...you just strap the camera to the kite strong and go? You have a remote for the shutter I presume
A: Mine is a auto rig, while in flight it has a actuating finger controlled by a servo pressing the shutter release button. At the same time the camera rig rotates  after each push of the shutter. There are radio controlled camera rigs and more complex rigs, that you can get.

Q: Jill/Twipply Skwood How do you tell what you're going to get a picture of? You just choose what you like from what photos it gets?
A: That is correct! I set the camera angle and let the rig do it’s thing and later I go through the captured photos and edit out blurry and unusable photos.

If you have any questions leave them for me in the comments and I will answer them on the next post.

Wow... sound like fun. I have not flown a kite in years. I remember when I was in grade school we were out in a field flying kites, when one of our famous storms came along. I would not let go of my kite as did not want to loose it. My mom & dad had to come and save me & my kite.

Love the fun captures you got from the kite flight. Smiles Barbara

Roger,

Tom and you and I should try to meet up this summer. I'm hoping to do some KAP in eastern Oregon, Idaho, and might get up to my aunt's place in Livingston, MT.

Oh Roger you are so so innovative. This is such a cool idea, just like that guy who shot camera in space and took photo of the earth. These are excellent captures, amazing. Anna :)
